DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

The Western Cape Arts Festivals (WCAF) Development Projects include the following programmes:

    a) Artists for Artists Programme – Digital Technology Project
    b) Beyond Busking Development Programme
    c) Events and Marketing Management Programme
    d) African Indigenous Renaissance (AIR) Entrepreneur Programme

In 2023, the Western Cape Arts Festivals (WCAF), in partnership with Ariva Arts Foundation, developed the Job Readiness Toolkit following the success of the Beyond Busking Project. The Job Readiness Toolkit is a multifaceted learning, upskilling, and employment project designed for artists and non-artists. The project creates pathways into the creative economy through practical skills development, mentorship, workplace experience, and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Successful applicants receive practical training and employment opportunities while developing skills as arts entrepreneurs, arts administrators, social media specialists, digital creatives, and events and marketing managers.

In 2025, the Western Cape Arts Festivals (WCAF) expanded the Job Readiness Toolkit Project into the Garden Route region through the introduction of the African Indigenous Renaissance (AIR) Entrepreneur Programme. The programme was established to extend WCAF’s vision deeper into rural communities, preserve and celebrate indigenous heritage, and position cultural tourism as a driver of sustainable economic growth, entrepreneurship, and creative industry development across the Western Cape.

ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS PROGRAMME

Bridging the Digital Divide for Artists

In an era where digital presence is crucial, the Artists for Artists Programme aims to equip creatives with essential digital skills. Our comprehensive curriculum covers:

  • Website Design and Development: Learn to create and maintain your own website.
  • Content Creation with SEO: Master the art of writing engaging content optimized for search engines.
  • Coding Fundamentals: Gain basic coding skills to enhance your digital projects.
  • Social Media Management: Develop strategies to manage and grow your social media presence.
  • Marketing Mastery: Dive into digital marketing, content marketing, marketing strategy, brand management, and public relations.

The Impact of Digital Proficiency

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of a strong online presence for artists. Those already familiar with digital marketing and media were better equipped to navigate the challenges. Today, digital skills are not just beneficial—they are essential for success in the art world. The internet has democratized art, serving as a populist force that levels the playing field between different socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.

The Evolution of Art in the Digital Age

Digital media has transformed the art landscape from passive to participatory, hierarchical to democratic, and traditional to interdisciplinary. This shift has created new opportunities for artists to engage with their audiences and expand their reach.

Navigating the Challenges of Digital Technology

While technology offers tremendous opportunities, it also presents challenges, mirroring the inequities in the broader arts sector. Our programme addresses these challenges, helping artists navigate the complexities of the digital world.

EVENTS AND MARKETING MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

A Vision for Growth and Sustainability

The Events and Marketing Management Training Programme was launched in 2022/23 as an essential educational and skills training initiative aimed at uplifting the Langa and Khayelitsha Arts Communities. This innovative project is a collaboration between WCAF, the Craft Design Institute (CDI), and the SEF Connectors Project.

Impact in Langa and Khayelitsha

Running from October 2022 to June 2023, the programme successfully trained 102 unemployed artists, providing them with the skills needed to thrive in events and marketing management. These newly skilled individuals played a pivotal role in co-creating the Langa and Khayelitsha Community Festivals held in June 2023, showcasing their talents and newfound expertise.

Expansion to Philippi

Building on the success in Langa and Khayelitsha, the programme extended its reach to the Philippi Arts Centre from October 2023 to February 2024. This phase of the project saw 25 youth, including 20 women, receive comprehensive training. The culmination of their hard work and learning was celebrated with the Philippi Community Arts Festival on March 21, 2024.

Key Achievements

The Events and Marketing Management Training Programme has demonstrated significant impact:

  • Skill Development: Empowered 127 local artists with valuable skills in events and marketing management.
  • Entrepreneurial Growth: Fostered entrepreneurial mindsets, enabling artists to explore sustainable career paths.
  • Community Engagement: Facilitated the creation of community festivals, providing platforms for artistic expression and community engagement.
  • Employment Opportunities: Prepared participants for employment as professional event organizers, opening doors to new career possibilities.

Looking Forward

The success of the Events and Marketing Management Training Programme underscores the importance of targeted educational initiatives in transforming lives and communities.
