The Beyond Busking Project is a music development and empowerment programme of Western Cape Arts Festivals (WCAF) that supports talented emerging musicians from underserved communities by providing access to professional training, mentorship and industry opportunities. The programme was created to bridge the gap between raw talent and professional music careers, helping participants develop the artistic, technical and business skills required to succeed in the music industry.
Participants receive training in vocal performance, guitar, songwriting, stage presence, music production, music video production, social media marketing, music publishing and music business management. Working alongside experienced facilitators and industry professionals, participants are guided through the process of creating original music, recording professional-quality songs and producing music videos that can be used to promote their work and build their careers.
The programme culminates in a public showcase and the release of original music, providing participants with valuable exposure and practical industry experience. Beyond the artistic outcomes, the project focuses on building confidence, self-belief, entrepreneurial thinking and sustainable income opportunities through the creative economy.
Since its inception, the Beyond Busking Project has supported more than 24 emerging musicians, resulting in the production of over 24 original songs and music videos. Approximately 90% of participants have reported increased income-generating opportunities through performances, collaborations and music-related work. Several graduates have gone on to secure national and international opportunities, demonstrating the programme's success in transforming talent into tangible career pathways.
