Dizu Plaatjies

DIZU PLAATJIES AND IBUYAMBO

Prof Dizu Plaatjies is a distinguished Xhosa musician, educator, and the founder of the acclaimed South African group Amampondo. Born in Lusikisiki, Pondoland, he is currently a professor and head of the Department of Ethnomusicology at the University of Cape Town, where he lectures on African music. Dizu is widely known for his pioneering work in African percussion and his significant contributions to South African music, both as a performer and an educator.

In the late 1970s, Dizu formed Amampondo, which initially performed on the streets before achieving international fame in the 1980s. The group’s pinnacle moment came when they performed at Wembley Stadium for the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, a landmark event in the fight against apartheid. Despite their growing global success, their music was banned for several years due to the anti-apartheid campaign, but Dizu received support from Scandinavian countries during this time.

After Amampondo, Dizu formed the ensemble Ibuyambo, which continues to captivate audiences worldwide, performing in over 90 countries. His work not only highlights his musical talents but also his deep connection to African culture and tradition. Dizu is also a passionate collector of handmade African instruments, showcasing his lifelong dedication to preserving and sharing the richness of African music.

With a career that bridges education and performance, Dizu Plaatjies remains a powerful ambassador for South African and African music globally.

GRIQUA CHOIR

Griqua choirs in South Africa, particularly noted for their hymnody, offer a fascinating glimpse into the community’s cultural expression and historical narrative. These hymns, sung during gatherings, not only echo the Griqua’s past struggles but also serve as a living testament to their identity and resilience. Through hymn singing, the Griqua are able to reflect both their personal and collective identities, shaping how they see themselves and how they are perceived within the broader South African context.

The Griqua’s distinctive music culture, deeply rooted in colonial, apartheid, and post-apartheid experiences, is both a celebration and a reclamation of their heritage. Hymnody plays a critical role in this cultural expression, acting as a vehicle for collective memory and a statement of selfhood. For the Griqua, music isn’t just an art form; it’s a way of declaring, “This is who we are.” To sing a hymn is to perform their identity—an identity formed by centuries of historical adversity but always tempered with resilience and faith.

The term lof, used by the Griqua to describe their hymns, encapsulates the significance of their music. While “lof” translates to “praise” in Afrikaans, it encompasses more than just the act of singing. It represents an ongoing, lived experience of spirituality and cultural pride. Lof is a way of life, embedded in the fabric of Griqua society and integral to their communal and personal expression.

As a form of cultural preservation, the Griqua hymns are not static; they evolve alongside the community’s changing realities. The music thus serves not only as a link to their past but also as a tool for reinvention in the present, allowing the Griqua to navigate the complexities of modern life while staying rooted in their traditions. Through the vibrant performances of their choirs, the Griqua continue to assert their presence, offering a powerful narrative of survival and cultural continuity in South Africa’s ever-changing landscape.

In this way, the Griqua’s hymnody is not just about the melodies themselves, but about the stories they tell and the identity they foster. Each song is a piece of history, a reflection of who the Griqua were, who they are, and who they aspire to be. Through their music, they remain a testament to the strength and endurance of their people, making lof more than a song—it’s a way of being.
