The Knysna African Arts Festival 2026 (AIR Festival) returned on 21 March 2026 with a vibrant celebration of African music, dance, visual arts, and cultural expression at Loerie Park Sports Grounds in Knysna.

Implemented by Western Cape Arts Festivals in partnership with Ariva Arts Foundation as part of the African Indigenous Renaissance (AIR) Project 2026, the festival honoured South Africa’s cultural heritage while creating meaningful opportunities for artists, youth, and creative entrepreneurs across the Garden Route region.

Supported by the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC), Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) Cycle 6, the Western Cape Government Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), Knysna Municipality, and Premier Hotels & Resorts, the festival created more than 250 performance and income-generating opportunities for local creatives and businesses.

Festival impact included:

• More than 250 performance and economic opportunities created
• 75% youth participation
• 55% women participation
•  Over 3,000 attendees celebrating African arts and culture

The festival featured live performances by acclaimed South African artists, including Prince Kaybee and Professor Dizu Plaatjies, alongside local musicians, poets, DJs, and performers celebrating African identity and storytelling through music and performance.

Highlights of the festival included:

• The AIR Dance Challenge featuring more than 100 young dancers from Knysna and surrounding communities
• Nature’s Language: Birds of the Ancients Exhibition showcasing leading local visual artists
• The African Arts Village, supporting local crafters, makers, and cultural entrepreneurs
• The Children’s Edutainment Zone, creating an interactive space for storytelling, play, and cultural education

The Knysna African Arts Festival 2026 stands as a platform for cultural preservation, artistic development, youth empowerment, and creative economic growth in the Western Cape.
